Ya know, I hear this question alot and mostly from guys that are new to the track, or know what group they "should" be in but want to bump up cause they want to ride with a buddy or something with there ego. My advice is, if it is your first time at the track, then sign up for C group, I don't care how good of a canyon rider you are and if you are "good" enough(fast enough and hold good lines) an instructor/control rider will notice and bump you up to B group. As for guys in B that want to move up, if you have to ask, then personally I think you should just stay in B cause you probaly aren't real confident and you may just wanna move up cause of again your friends or your ego, you may again get bumped up to A by an instructor/control rider. The whole think about trackdays is to go out and have fun and if you are having to have pressure on you trying to ride in a group that you aren't ready for, then your day may really suck and you might find yourself on the pavement cause you were trying to ride over your head. In hindsight, B group is the scariest group to ride in and most will agree with me on this. It is because you get a big mixture in that group, some fast guys but they don't hold good lines and usually brake way too early..etc. Bottomline is just to go out and have fun and don't worry about what group your friends in or who's the fastest (though it is fun to dice it up with friends and a little friendly competition is always fun, just make sure you ride your ride and don't get caught up in it), it is not racing it is a trackday. So come out and have a blast... __________________ WSMC#753 Special thanks to: R. I totally agree. My first track day was at WSIR and of course i started in C group. Going into C, even on my first track day, i kinda knew i was already going to be sand bagging but It allowed me to get a feel of the track, learn the lines and adapt to riding that close to other people. By my 3rd session i was bump into B class and it was a HUGE difference. I noticed a lot of riders not holding there lines through corners and like blakester said, braking WAY to early. I was able to break away from most of the pack but there was several other guys faster then me. I must say it would of definitely suck to start in a wrong class and even worse, on a track you have never been too. For my future track days (other then WSIR) I will continue to start my day in C and hopefully progress through out the day. K2 GsxR600 | K8 GsxR1000 | K2 RM125

I'm hoping to get to the track this year for the first time and do plan to ride in "C" group. I don't have a big ego and I know my limits, although I'm sure I'll push harder on the track than when I'm in the hills. I just want to get out have a good time, enjoy the thrill of riding the track, and pick up some good pointers from the veterans in the process. Im one of those fast B guys with horrible lines. Im not getting out of B till they make me. Theres always A group guys sand bagging in B. So b is my choice for fun. For example, i was just tearing it up and thaught I was fastest guy in B. Then some dude just smoked my ass. Theres always A riders in b just having fun... Endorsing rider comradery. One rider at a time! Go CCR!!

I will have to concur with you on this Derik. Some where in this forum I spoke similar words regarding those who are doing a track day for the first time with either little to experienced street riders that they should sign up for C group. I will have to agree if you have to question your self about going to A group then it is probably not for you. However, I would like to add that A group might stand for "advanced", but at the same time is doesn't mean you have to be at racer's pace to enjoy this group. My though about A group is you are out with other riders you really don't have to worry about because they know what they are doing and will hold their lines. You don't have to be concerned with "what in the hell is this guy doing in front of me" thoughts. B group is scary mostly because you have your C level riders riding in this group who shouldn't be there. These types of riders are all over the board and cause a danger not only to others, but themselves. Track day riders really have to check their egos back at the house and leave it there. Granted, it is very difficult to do this, but in order to enjoy a fairly painless day it is a must. But like Derik said there is nothing wrong with a little friendly competition and some bragging rights amongst friends (isn't that right Spanky...hehehe).

okay so... yeah im a little new to this forum.. but in response to "what group should I be in" coming from someone who has only spent a single day at a track...
A little about myself... Been riding cycles for many years... raced MX till I was 13 and have ridden street about 12 years... I would say that I am a well experienced rider who knows my limits and the limits of my machine...
BUT... oh yeah, there is a BIG butt... and not the kind on my wifes backside :-)
anyways, just recently... April 20th, I attended my first track day at buttonwillow... Knowing that I had never spent a moments time on a track, I signed up for C group. Did I smoke fools? oh yeah! Did I just into B group? Nope! Why? Because their were guys still faster than me... My goal was to increase knowledge not speed... Speed will get you hurt without the knowledge and understand on how to control and apply it...
There is nothing wrong with making sure you are as safe as possible, and entering the C group for a period of time to ensure you are capable on multiple levels before stepping up to higher groups... I have several members of Moto Infinity who ride B group, and even more who are AFM racers and ride A group...
No reason to move too fast... be safe, be comfortable and return home in one peice...
